The sixth and final homework assignment, dealing with CGI programming, will be given out next week, during our second lecture on CGI programming.
Once we talk about GUI programming with Perl/Tk, I may or may not create an extra credit assignment to be done with Perl/Tk. I haven't decided yet.

My TAs and I are noticing a severe slow-down on rcs-sun4, quite likely because of the number of perl students currently bombarding it. Because I can see how this would impede your progress in completing homework 5, I am extending the deadline for the homework until tomorrow night at 11:59:59pm.
To avoid the backlash of "But I worked so hard to get it done on time!!!" emails, I will award a 20 point bonus to anyone who does submit the homework within the original deadline.
There will be no 'late' deadline for this assignment. Anything submitted after Wednesday at 11:59:59pm will be graded a zero.

I'm cancelling Perl class for today. My solution to HW3 will be on
the course website after 4pm today. Please email me with any questions
you have about it.
We will continue with lectures on References and Subroutines next week. Homework 4 will also be given out at that time. - Thursday, February 17, 2005
- I've finally realized that no one is ever going to come to office hours on Friday evenings, so I've moved my Friday hours to Monday. Same time, 5:30-6:30pm. Tuesday hours remain unchanged.

I've just received notice from the registrar's office that our
final exam is tentatively scheduled to take place smack in the
middle of exam week - Wednesday, 5/11 from 3pm-6pm. There are
no other CS courses with this time block, so hopefully the
chance of conflict will be small. However, there are of course
other Institute courses holding their exam at that time. I
have listed those courses below. If you are registered for
any of these courses, please let me know ASAP. The registrar
wants to know aproximately how many conflicts are created by
the tentative schedule, to determine if any modifications are
warranted.

- As I'm looking over the initial homework submissions, there are several code fragments that catch my eye. I've decided to start a new "Helpful Tips" section. These are examples of code that are not wrong, but could be better or more "Perl-ish". Please check it at least semi-frequently

- Please note that James's office hours have changed. He will now be available Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-1:30.

- In classic RPI fashion, they have fixed a problem exactly
one day later than it would have been most helpful. One of
the remote access machines, rcs-sun4.rpi.edu, has a newer
version of perl installed. perl 5.8.2 is available on this
machine. However, in order to access it, you must
NOT have installed the perl-new setup
package. If you have already completed the
setup -permanent perl-newcommand, please log in to rcs-sun4 and issue this command:
setup -remove -permanent perl-new
I apologize for the contradictions. - The helpdesk informs me that the
perldoccommand is now functional on the RCS machines. Rejoice! - Tuesday, January 18, 2005
- Please note that the location of the class has changed from DCC 337 to DCC 324. This is a permanent change.

- Welcome to Programming in Perl. Within the first week of class, please fill out this signup form. This will add you to the class mailing list as well as the course grading system. No grades can be recorded for you until this form has been filled out. Thank you.
- The VCC Helpdesk offers a series short courses. Those of you unfamiliar with Unix and/or Emacs may be interested in taking either or both of the courses on these topics. They will prove useful for this class. The Intro to Unix course is scheduled for Tuesday, January 25 at 4pm-6pm and the Intro to Emacs course is scheduled for Tuesday, February 1 at 4pm-6pm. Preregistration is required.

- This is the work-in-progress webpage for Spring 05's Programming in Perl Course. It is not yet finished, and likely contains several broken links.
